My wife has been recommending that I read Jeffrey Eugenides’ Middlesex for years – often citing it as one of her top ten favourite books of all time (because winning a Pulitzer isn’t enough for me, apparently).
I’d read Eugenides’ Marriage Plot, which shocked my wife (insofar as she couldn’t believe that was the book I’d chosen to start my journey with Jeffrey), but I’ll admit that Middlesex is considerably better. Enthralling subject matter aside, I was more taken with Eugenides’ narrative voice as he chronicles his family’s journey to the United States and the secret they carried with them.
